Isekai: Waifu Overlord – Basic Introduction Guide

Basic Introduction to IWO

This guide covers the main gameplay loops of Isekai: Waifu Overlord (IWO), including the village, expeditions, girls, classes, events, and commonly used terminology.

Core Gameplay Loop

The main gameplay loop revolves around the village and expeditions.

Village

The village generates money, which is then used to fund expeditions.

Expeditions

Expeditions have three main gameplay systems:

  1. Anvil: The Anvil is upgraded with money.
  2. Hammer farming: Hammers are randomly dropped when waves are cleared.
  3. Dungeons: Dungeons provide key resources used to build up your girls.
Hammer Farming

The recommended hammer farming strategy is to kill fast and die fast.

Hammers are randomly dropped when a wave is cleared. Hammer drops do not scale with the current difficulty level, so you can remain at a low difficulty, fight weaker monsters, and kill them faster.

The basic strategy is:

  1. Stay at a low difficulty where monsters can be killed quickly.
  2. Clear waves as fast as possible.
  3. Collect the randomly dropped hammers.
  4. Avoid spending unnecessary time pushing higher difficulties.

Hammers provide 10 XP per item sold. This experience contributes to Sakuya’s levels, which increase combat power through better gear.

Dungeons

Dungeons award key resources used to build up your girls.

Girls

Girls provide both combat skills and economic skills.

Combat skills are important for builds and PvP purposes in events.

Destiny System

IWO has a Destiny System, where duplicate copies of a girl increase her Destiny level, progressing from D0 to higher levels.

D3 and D5 are commonly important stages because they unlock additional parts of the girl’s spells and can provide effects useful for control, buffs, and debuffs. D5 usually also provides a passive effect tied to the account.

Recommended Girls for New Players

A complete discussion of the best girls requires a more detailed guide. For new players, the following girls are highlighted:

  • Nyakol: Recommended for Archer players. This recommendation does not apply to Mage players.
  • Alberta S. Kammer: Useful at D3 because of her Slow effect.
  • Chamara: A strong AoE damage dealer with a low cooldown.

Other common girls are mostly considered bad compared with Legendary and Mythic girls, which are the bread and butter of the game.

Classes and Stat Priorities

Archer / Sniper

Archer, usually referring to the Sniper class, is recommended until you can switch to Star Mage.

Stat priority:

  1. AS (Attack Speed)
  2. DMG (Damage)
  3. 50 to 70% Crit Chance
  4. 150 to 250% Crit Damage
  5. Pure Damage

Star Mage

Star Mage is recommended for whales or when you have 8 good girls at level 70 or higher with D3+.

Stat priority:

  1. DMG (Damage)
  2. CDR (Cooldown Reduction)
  3. SD (Skill Damage)

Other Classes

  • Assassin: Attack Speed is considered more valuable than a small amount of additional Crit. Do not pick it.
  • Valkyrie: The return on hammer farming per second is considered better than pushing slightly further. Do not pick it.
  • Barbarian: Considered bad. Do not pick it.
  • Enchantress: Considered a poor choice because of how CDR is calculated. Do not pick it.

Normal Summoning and Wishing

Wishing is intended to provide 50/50 odds of getting the girl you request when you pull at the relevant rarity tier.

Currently, there are only two options in the Wishing pool:

  • Lumeria
  • Annie

Because of this, Wishing is considered essentially useless.

Lumeria

Lumeria is one of the strongest damage dealers that can be obtained easily.

Annie

Annie’s spell is single-target, which makes her inherently bad according to the source. Her D3 effect provides evasion and has some advantages, but it is not recommended for new players.

Events

IWO events are divided into several categories.

Festivals

Festivals are 2-week-long events.

Quests unlock over 10 days. Completing quests allows you to spin a wheel, with a chance to unlock a Legendary girl.

Divine Mountain

Divine Mountain is a weekly PvP event where you upgrade an alternative Anvil and attempt to complete as many levels as possible.

Players are ranked by completed level both within their group and across the whole server. The relevant versions are:

  • Steam
  • Nutaku
  • Web

The main reward is Divine Shards, which are used to unlock Mythic-tier girls and some Legendary girls.

Divine Mountain is also where you unlock and upgrade artifacts by obtaining duplicates.

Astral Arena

Astral Arena is a roguelike event where you attempt to complete as many levels as possible in a single run.

After each cleared level, you select buffs or equipment.

The event occurs every 2 days. You have a 24-hour window to launch your 2-hour-long attempt.

Farm

The farm is a minor gameplay loop where you plant and harvest crops to gain village boosts.
