Midnight Ghost Hunt – Tier List

This is mostly just for newer players who have no idea what anything does/what could be fun. All of this is just my opinion, and funnily enough my opinion is not objective, so make your own.

Hunter Stuff

All credit goes to Paladente !

Yeah, the Hunters go first. I really, really like playing hunter. Sure, the ghosts have their own tricks and they’re fun in their own right, but I prefer the hunt style. Before we get to gear and whatnot, here’s some tips:

  • Depending on your play style, going lone wolf can work just as well as sticking with the squad. You just need to build accordingly.
  • Resupplying before midnight isn’t always necessary. If your team has a good variety of tracking and smashing tools, using the generator before midnight is usually a waste of time.
  • Midnight is scary, but not impossible. Don’t despair when time runs out! Practice and solid coordination/reflexes can easily allow you to get away for the whole of midnight. Work together, find a good hiding spot, or get good weapons. But most importantly, rely on your skill!
  • Don’t bully the team/ghosts. You’re not a hotshot. This is a team game. Work with your team. Even as a loner, giving any info is invaluable to teammates, even if you’re on the other side of the map.

Hunter Weapons

Oh boy, the fun things!

Spectral Cannon:

The cannon is the basic weapon you start with, and it’s a real good one at that. While it totes splash damage, that’s not something that is usually useful in the game. However, an 8 round mag and good damage make it a reliable weapon in every situation. Even at further levels, using this is a solid choice.

Salt Shotgun:

“Oh boy! The super shotgun from DOOM with added salt!” is what I thought when I saw this gun (and props to you if you thought the same). However, it’s not as cool. It has really high damage, but at the cost of needing to be very, very close to the ghost/prop to achieve it. Other than that, the damage is fine, the range is garbage and the reload takes way longer than it’s worth. I’m sure higher level play can make it work, but until I’m that skilled, I just don’t really like it. DO NOT USE IT DURING MIDNIGHT EITHER. That’s just suicide.

Ghostsmasher:

Now, when looking at a melee weapon in a mostly ranged arsenal whilst fighting melee enemies, you might think that it’s a really dumb choice. But the smasher is actually really, really fun and has the stats to back it up. The shield helps you survive any and all attacks, and can really save your ass during midnight. The damage is solid against both props and ghosts alike, and it’s melee range is a bit longer than you’d assume so you can catch ghosts a bit better. All in all a very solid choice.

Sledgehammer:

With a coordinated partner/team, the sledgehammer is the best sweeper tool. Yes, tool. This is not a weapon to use against ghosts. You pick the sledgehammer because you want to make sure the ghosts cannot hide in any props because you smashed them all. If your partner has a good ghost buster gun equipped, and either one of you tracking and the other vacuuming, you become a serious threat to the ghosts. I personally don’t use it all that much, but you get my highest respect.

Project X:

I really, really like the project. A big ass ghost busting minigun, with the right amount of heft and damage to boot? Sign me up. Now I don’t want to let my bias slip through here. The overheat is very strict: the moment you hit full fire-rate, you have about half a second of fire left before you burn up, and the cooldown takes a while. However, manage your bursts right and this thing is an absolute beast. Not at midnight, though. The slow rev-up will get you killed.

Frostbite:

This has to be one of the best guns in the game in my opinion. An ice blasting SMG which slows ghosts and props is extremely powerful in both before and after midnight. The high magazine makes up for the very, very low damage (2-3 dmg per bullet). The biggest downside is that a prop needs to be fully frozen (which takes about a second or two of continuous fire to happen) to start taking damage, so make sure you’re with a partner who can take down props (a sledge user preferably).

Reaper:

The gauss rifle. Now before you elite sniper bros and 360 fanatics lose your mind, this thing does not do hitscan damage! Ok, that’s not entirely true. When you take a shot, a bolt sticks onto a prop/ghost and explodes, dealing good damage. The shot itself does about 4 damage, but the bolt does a tasty 40 (most ghosts have around 100, so 44 damage is very, very good). It is an amazing hunting weapon before midnight, but loses it’s efficiency afterwards. It’s biggest weakness is props. The reason is that if the ghost is even slightly cognitive, they’ll know to prop hop when shot with this thing, as the bolt will not follow them into the other prop.

Harpoon Bazooka:

The ultimate utility weapon. Depending on your build, teammates and general weapon preference, this thing can either be a spicy electric stick launcher, or a ghost team’s worst nightmare. It launches an electrified harpoon, keeping whatever it hit in it’s grasp and dealing heavy damage over time to it. If you see a ghost trying to run, this thing will make sure their spectral ass stays put. If someone on your team uses this, they either thought it looked cool or are a genuine threat to the enemy.

Riot Shield:

I love shields in general. Taking the role of a defender in games is something I always enjoy. So you can imagine my disappointment when I realised the riot shield was hot garbage. The bash attack is basically pointless, and the shield can take about 3 attacks before overheating. I’m sad.

Flamethrower:

I haven’t used this weapon all that much to be honest. The DoT is very good, but the reload is a bit on the slow side and the direct damage is lacklustre. Make your own opinion on it, I’m not really a fan.

Tier List

A – Sledgehammer, Frostbite, Ghostsmasher, Reaper

These things are nuts. If you are a meta slave…why the hell are you reading my tier list, go somewhere more qualified.

B – Harpoon Bazooka, Spectral Cannon, Project X

Very solid weapons in most scenarios, just struggle a little bit compared to others.

C – Salt Shotgun, Flamethrower

They’re fine. Use ’em if you want, I’m not your parents, I just don’t find them all that fun.

D – Riot Shield

R.I.P the shield. Am sad.

Hunter Gadgets

Radar:

The basic tracking gadget. If the needle on the meter goes towards the red, you’re looking in the right spot. The tutorial explains it, so no need to go further. Solid tool in all situations, though useless during midnight.

Vacuum:

Absolutely Necessary for games, unless you think your team can ace in the first minute. Tutorial explains it just as well. Useless after midnight.

Defibrillator:

Now we’re leaving the basics. If you’ve been in real life before, you know what a defibrillator does. Rub the pads, revive a friend. Very useful during midnight if your team helps defend you.

Medic Kit:

A great support tool. Heal yourself or your teammates. Has 3 charges before needing to visit the generator to recharge. Useful at any time of the game. (Have you noticed that the gadgets are more simple than the weapons?)

Camcorder:

If you’ve played Phasmophobia, you need no introduction to this thing. For those of you who haven’t, plop down a camera and it’ll ping any ghost that moves in front of it, however the ghosts can possess it, so be on your guard!

Spectrophone:

Same deal with the camcorder, if you’re a phasmo ghost hunter you’ll know this one. Point in a direction and any ghostly noises will be heard through walls, ceilings and floors, however you’ll be unable to determine the distance the noise is to you.

Pathfinder:

Ghosts in this game leave behind glowing blue trails wherever they “walk”, which disappear after a while. The pathfinder lets you see and thus follow those trails. Keep in mind that there is a post “death” ghost skill that can create false trails, so be wary of traps.

Trap:

Self-explanatory. Slap it down and any ghost that tries to float on by it will get wrangled and stopped, giving you free shots at it. Note that any attacks from a ghost will instantly break the trap whether it went off or not.

Grenade:

A boom ball. Pull the pin, and blow stuff up. Not ghosts though. The timer on this boomer is quite long, so unless you can catch a ghost unaware and thus use the time to cook it, it’s not gonna do jack to them.

Grappling hook:

While the grappling hook is fun to use, it’s sadly rather useless. Map verticality is only present in the Theatre, and even then with proper coordination you can pincer ghosts no matter which level they end up on. It’s more useful when you’re trying to run during midnight, but again good ghost coordination will end up being your demise.

C4:

Actually pretty good. If you know where a ghost is, using C4 to limit it’s escape routes is a great tactic. Best used when you’re not taking the role of a tracker.

Tier List

S – Radar, Vacuum, Pathfinder

These things are a must in any round. If you don’t have any of these, you’re basically begging for a midnight showdown. They’re obviously useless when midnight does strike, given you don’t want to be tracking the ghosts by then, but their general usage ranks them this high.

A – C4, Medic Kit, Defibrillator, Trap

These gadgets are much more versatile in their usage, seeing action both before and during midnight. Any of these are a solid pick when you have trackers that know what they’re doing.

B – Camcorder, Spectrophone, Grenade, Gappling Hook

Useful, but limited in their usage. Takes some getting used to in general.
