Generic tips I have for cavalry:

When possible engage from the rear or sides.
Hit the enemy when they are already tied down fighting something else.
Do not be afraid to dismount them if the situation calls for it (terrain, etc).
Use them to take out the enemy ranged units as soon as you can.

Have range, either mounted or on foot. Use them as a primary target at the front of the army, and then fall back when the main force gets close. This allows for a flank from the main cavalry force.

Make sure to split up your cavalry a bit too. Have a small group that can guard your ranged as they retreat or prevent any flanks from enemy cavalry while your main group does the big work.
