Rusty’s Retirement – Troubleshooting Guide (Fixes & Workarounds)

Known Issues and How to Fix Them

The game has a black background and I can’t click anything

How to fix it:

  1. Open up your Steam library and find Rusty’s Retirement.
  2. Click on the gear icon, then select Manage, and finally Browser local files.
  3. Look for Rusty’s Retirement.exe, right-click on it, and choose Properties.
  4. In the Properties window, go to the Compatibility tab.
  5. Check the box that says Disable fullscreen optimizations.
  6. Click OK, and you’re all set!

If you notice any missing parts or the game doesn’t fill the screen properly, just press R or T. That should reset the camera and UI for you.

Note: Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not have a known fix at the moment.

The game has a black/white background, but otherwise still works

Please try swapping the monitor, loading a save, restarting the game, or pressing the “R” and “T” hotkeys a few times.

Mac: The transparency of the game isn’t working correctly

This is a known issue on Mac that can be fixed by restarting the game in most cases:

The game window isn’t filling my monitor correctly

Two hotkeys are available to try. The “R” key should reset the window to it’s default settings, while the “T” will also look at different monitor properties. Please try these a few times to see if they fix your issue.

Achievements are not unlocking correctly

Please try to restart steam if none of your achievements are unlocking. If it is only certain ones, you can try restarted the game, as it makes checks for achievements whenever the game loads. Currently, the architect achievement requires you to build something on top of the computer, but this may be a bug.

Attempting to move object/building from one spot to another has caused both to become unusable

Fixes are being pushed for these issues. Make sure to keep your game updated, and try restarting the game if you come across this issue. This issue is actively being looked at…

My save file has an error message or my progress was lost

Unfortunately, your save may have become corrupted, or the game failed to save your progress. If you have an antivirus installed, please mark the save location as a trusted folder to prevent intervention. In case of an issue with saving, the save folder does include backups of each save. You can attempt to recover your save by copying the contents of the backup into the main save, but please understand that this may not work. Saving often and making backups of your saves on an occasional basis will help keep your farms safe.

Other troubleshooting options

Whenever an unknown issue occurs, I recommend restarting/updating the game, verifying the game data, or restarting the computer.

How to find my save files?

Windows:

%USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/MisterMorrisGames/Rusty's Retirement/

Mac:

~/Library/Application Support/MisterMorrisGames/Rusty's Retirement/

Can I have more than one save?

When you make a new farm, each farm is saved under a new file. You can switch between farms using the load option in the main menu.

How do I use the Twitch Intigration?

The Twitch Integration Guide can be found here.

Can I run it on Linux?

While it is not natively supported, some users have found luck getting the game to run in a windowed mode.

Can I run it on Steam Deck?

Yes!

Can I play with the game at the top/left side of the monitor instead of the bottom/right side?

In settings, adjust the Taskbar or the Sidebar values until the game window is positioned on the screen wherever you would like it to appear.

Can I move the map?

You can use the right mouse button to click and drag the map, or use the middle mouse button to do so without cancelling your current action. If you are using a track-pad or otherwise don’t have a middle mouse button, you can look into getting an auto hotkey application so assign this function to a different key. Check your device/hardware settings to see if this is already an option to you.
