The Only Way to Nimrod
By Tuh’Veeren.
I started running this list a while back when I was feeling nostalgic for ol’ Pinkie. The old lists had gone from meh to trash as the meta moved past Nimrod, leaving him relegated to an alt spot in Phoenix lists. Then Blink tech came along, which gave Nim a sharp kick back to the upper side of meh. There are plenty of enticing combos, and believe me I tried em all. I can’t tell you how many cubes I fed trying to make Gala/Nimrod work again.
The only consistent list I’ve found uses freaking Grandmaster of all cards. Once you learn to play around GM, that lil’ fella will consistently win you 8 cubers. No one expects Destroyer to jump mid on turn 7 (even better if you Venom/Carnage the same turn). Zola/GM combos can also be particularly nasty. These combos help you win with or without Nimrod, which gives the shell the consistency it needs to be worth running.
This deck is wonderful for clearing Destroy Bounties in a meta plagued by Loki lists. Opponents will often snap on Loki thinking they’ll pull Death/Knull, only to be left grumbling when they draw Destroyer instead. Just watch out for Shadow King…many Ari/Loki players have been running him lately and that can get tricky.
The dream curve would look something like this:
- T1 Skip
- T2 Nova, Nico (destroy spell)
- T3 Magik
- T4 Shuri
- T5 Nimrod
- T6 Destroyer (left or right lane)
- T7 Carnage (mid), Grandmaster (Destroyer lane), Venom (mid)
Circumstance can cause you to re-order that T7 play of course. I did the math on different T7 variations, and the above combo is the most raw power @ 137 (39-46-52). GM onto Venom (in Destroyer’s original lane) can focus your power more in 2 specific lanes, but your total will only reach around 117 (52-50-15).
The Electro & Blink combo is there in case you’ve missed Shuri/Nimrod, but be careful dropping the Zappy boi on T3. Without Blink that’s almost always gonna mean a loss (unless you have Nimrod – Destroyer in hand).
