New World – How to Beat The First Boss in the Newest Dungeon (Savage Divide)

The first boss in the newest Dungeon Savage Divide is a complete pain in the ass to new players and mainly to me. Here’s how to beat that Beast Lord black and blue.

Where to Find the Monkey

All credit goes to Kier !

The Monkey, (I think is Torok, but that might be a different monkey) is the first boss in the new Savage Divide dungeon that has had every single party I’ve run with confused and terrified with these weird new mechanics. AGS actually did a great job with it, but it’s very unclear the first time.

You will get to him once you complete enough of the dungeon (aka, put the balls on the ball holders), and climb the steps to see his stupid mug sitting in a room with one element on each side. Don’t be alarmed! The worse he can do is give you the urge to put a fist in your computer, which is hardly new for MMO players.

Killing the Monkey

You will need a tank and a healer (to no one’s surprise) but DPS do, in fact, need to stay alive through this encounter! Shocking!

The main gimmick in this fight is handing this pre-man whenever he has an tantrum at one of the elements around the room. By that, I mean those staffs you slaved away over in the main story quest are actually useful for a fight other than stupid Isabella (Tempest Heart final boss)!

The Monkey will start the fight by jumping to a random element and getting juiced up. Then, he will jump to your tank (who has aggroed him by now, cut pristine carnelian gems are a must) and start slapping them around.

Tip for tanks who keep getting their shield ♥ up here: Time your blocks only when he slaps, and you’ll never run out of shield! This means right clicking when he attacks, then letting go in between attacks. This also works when you’re running around the clouds of ♥ that will spawn if the rest of your team doesn’t do their job. You’ll never be the problem for why the team all died again.

After 3 (or 4, he’s sneaky) tank attacks, he will do an elemental move that can target anyone, so look out for a target sign on your head!. This highly depends on which element he’s on, which will impact your play style around him. I will put this in another section for when you’ll need to glance over at it mid-fight.

He will continue this pattern of attacking the tank then an random-target elemental move til the end of time.

So, you say, it’s just a regular boss then?

Ha, no.

In order to stun the Monkey and get rid of his element, either the healer or dps will need to interact with the glyph on the representation of the element he’s using. Now, you cannot do this right away. You will need to wait until he’s completed two elemental attacks to do this. He might even be a biotch and attack you while you interact with the glyph, so be aware of your surroundings!

When you’re able to get rid of it, the Monkey will be open to attacks for around 5 or so seconds. This is prime time for everyone to wail on this bare ass walkin pain in the ass.

After you get rid of his element though, aoe circles of elemental pain will start circling around the room. To destroy these, whoever activated the glyph element will need to stand in them to trigger them. You are immune to your own element.

As an example, you were the one to shut down his fire element. Now, you are the one who needs to stand in fire circles to get rid of them. Tuduhhhhh.

Now you as a team get rid of all the circles, have your tank aggro the Monkey consistently, and don’t die to his stupid high damage elemental attacks! Yay!

Heh good luck lol.

Elemental Attacks

These are the elemental attacks that I know of, and how to avoid them.

Fire

  • Monkey runs and leaves a trail of fire. Dodge into the middle of the flames, you’ll be fine.
  • Monkey releases waves of lava. Dodge into the lava, you’ll be fine. If you’re close to him, aim to be anywhere but in front of him when that happens.

Ice

  • Monkey runs and leaves a trail of ice. Just avoid the trail of ice he leaves.
  • Monkey claps and sends out a cone of ice. TANKS, DODGE THIS. It will break your shield if you don’t! All others, avoid it.

Lightning

  • Monkey sends out lightning ball. TANKS, AVOID – cannot block this. Avoid this, and try not to stand next to allies if you do get hit.

Earth

  • Monkey ground pounds the middle. TANKS, AVOID – not worth the block and its best not to get close. All avoid this.

TLDR Roles

DPS: Focus using the glyphs around the room when corresponding with the element he’s using. Only one person can use one element. When aoe circles of elements appear, step into the element you denied him of.

Healer: Focus healing and grab a glyph^.

Tank: Focus keeping the Monkey’s aggro. You will NOT pick up a glyph.
