Sengoku Rance – Ashikaga Clan Guide

Ashikaga Clan Walkthrough

  • Provinces: Kyo, Viper Oil Field

Basics

You can declare war on the Ashikaga Clan on Turn 3 or later for 8 Negotiation (Neg).

If you do not declare war, the Ashikaga Clan can demand gold from you on random turns when they are not at war with the Oda Clan. If you refuse to pay, they will declare war on you.

The amount of gold demanded is the lower of:

  • Your current total amount of gold
  • The Oda Clan’s current NP multiplied by the current turn count

This event will not trigger if the Oda Clan has no gold or does not have Kouhime.

Before Turn 5, there is also a 50% chance that this event will not trigger, even when no other event has taken priority. Usually, this means that at the end of Turn 3, if you are not at war with the Ashikaga Clan, you will receive either this event or Kojika Yamanaka’s first event, with equal probability.

The Ashikaga Clan will automatically declare war if you are at war with Tenshiism. This appears to occur just before Turn 35 if you have not declared war on anyone by that point.

If you are at war with the Ashikaga Clan, an event can trigger in which the unvassaled Hara Clan declares war on you.

Vassalization

After seeing the event where Choushin writes a letter to all the feudal lords in Nippon asking for help, you can demand the Ashikaga Clan’s surrender for 18 Negotiation.

This event only triggers if:

  • You are at war with the Ashikaga Clan.
  • The Ashikaga Clan owns only one province.
  • You have not seen the event before.

Once vassalized, the Ashikaga Clan can send reinforcements.

Hidden Ashikaga Attacks

If you are at war with the Ashikaga Clan and they own only one province, it appears that they can gain the ability to attack a random Oda-owned province that they can reach through a hidden, one-time end-of-turn event.

These are the lowest-priority end-of-turn events for the Ashikaga Clan. The attack can occur only once and only if they have no higher-priority events.

The attack includes Choushin Ashikaga at his maximum troop count in the back row. The front row contains:

  • A ninja
  • A Samurai with a very high troop count
  • An Ashigaru

These three units are generated specifically for this battle.

It is unknown whether the two remaining back-row slots can be filled with other units. The three units created for this fight cease to exist afterward. Any seemingly identical units that appear later are newly created.

Because this is an end-of-turn event, theoretically the attack will occur after any other attacks by the Ashikaga Clan and will ignore political chaos.

If you are still at war with the Ashikaga Clan after this attack, two additional hidden end-of-turn events can occur on subsequent turns. The first has the Ashikaga Clan attempt to recruit three new units, either by spawning them or using the ronin recruitment pool. The last has them attempt to recruit two new units.

Conquering the Ashikaga Clan

Conquering the Ashikaga Clan causes the first gourd to be broken in a start-of-turn event.

This requires the cherry blossom event to have been viewed first, and the event can be delayed by other events.

Noteworthy Commanders

Isoroku Yamamoto

Isoroku Yamamoto is a powerful archer unit who is marked as an Important Character while fighting for the Ashikaga Clan. This status can be removed.

She joins the Ashikaga Clan through an end-of-turn event after they have been at war with Oda for one turn. If the declaration of war occurs during another end-of-turn event, her arrival is delayed by an additional turn.

For example:

  • If you manually declare war on Turn 4, Isoroku joins the Ashikaga Clan at the end of Turn 5.
  • If the Ashikaga Clan declares war after you refuse to pay their demand at the end of Turn 4, she joins at the end of Turn 6.

Her joining can also be delayed if other events interfere with her event, although this is very unlikely.

As long as Isoroku is a member of the Ashikaga Clan, the first battle in which Rance participates against them automatically results in a loss for Oda. This event requires Sill.

If you annihilate Isoroku’s unit during a battle that you win, an event occurs in which she flees. Shortly afterward, an event occurs in which Choushin scolds her.

The scolding event fully heals her unit and removes her Important Character status. Because Isoroku is a route heroine, the event also causes her to be automatically captured whenever the game checks whether she should be captured or killed.

As long as your prison is unlocked, contains no more than 20 units, and you have not annihilated more than one other enemy unit during the battle in which Isoroku was annihilated, she is guaranteed to be captured.

According to the game’s code, this may also apply if you reduce her troop count below 20 without reducing it to 0.

The event triggered by conquering the last territory of the Ashikaga Clan takes priority over this.

If your prison contains more than 20 units, the capture chance should drop to 50%. If it contains more than 25 units, the capture chance is 0%.

Isoroku Capture Exploit

After seeing the scolding event, you can capture Isoroku by sending Suzume alone into a battle against her.

If Suzume assassinates Isoroku, the capture is automatic under the rules above. Suzume is an Important Character and therefore cannot be killed, so there is no risk to Suzume’s unit from this method.

The mechanics become more complicated if other units on Isoroku’s side are captured or killed during the battle.

Regardless of these conditions, Isoroku is automatically captured when you conquer the Ashikaga Clan.

Shigeyoshi Inoue and Tamon Yamaguchi

Shigeyoshi Inoue and Tamon Yamaguchi are Isoroku’s two archer retainers.

They join after you see Isoroku’s second purple event, provided that:

  • You have enough open commander slots.
  • You have at least 7 free NP.

They are worse versions of Isoroku and, other than her, are the only archers who can learn the two Yamato clans’ unique archer skills.

Their names are displayed in the game progress information.

Ikkyu

Ikkyu can be captured in battle but will not be automatically captured when you conquer the Ashikaga Clan.

His special skill, Witty Turnabout, can reverse the battle’s advantage and turn a losing battle into a winning one. However, the skill can only be used three times during the game, so it should be reserved for extremely difficult battles.

After it has been used three times, Witty Turnabout is replaced by Battle Tactics I.

Choushin Ashikaga

Choushin Ashikaga is automatically captured after conquering the Ashikaga Clan.

His stats are very poor, and he is widely considered the worst unit in the game. He is only worth recruiting for the Imperial Ring and for the character clears of himself and Akihime.

Yoshiteru Ashikaga

Yoshiteru Ashikaga is a level 45 generic-faced commander who can be captured in battle.

His name is displayed in the game progress information.

Kyouko Kuge

After Kyo is conquered, Kyouko Kuge can be recruited for 15 Negotiation.

She starts with Mercy Charge, a very useful skill for capturing other commanders.

Her name is displayed in the game progress information.

Kyoko Kuge

After Kyo is conquered, Kyoko Kuge can be recruited for 15 Negotiation.

She starts with Money Management, which gives a small boost to income depending on your treasury.

Her name is displayed in the game progress information.

Mino Triumvirate

The Mino Triumvirate consists of:

  • Stubborn Ittetsu, Tactician
  • Cucumber Andou, Onmyouji
  • Takuan-sama, Samurai

After conquering Viper Oil Field, a purple command becomes available there. 3G mentions the Mino Triumvirate during this event.

After seeing it, you can recruit each member in Viper Oil Field for 3 Negotiation.

If you have all three at the same time, you can recruit Oily Girl Dousan.

Oily Girl Dousan

Oily Girl Dousan is a Sohei who can be obtained after recruiting all three members of the Mino Triumvirate and using Rance’s satisfaction bonus.

She has Action Transfer 1 in army battles and starts with 4 moves. Therefore, she makes a great combination with units whose moves are spent after using a powerful attack, such as Urza.

Her name is displayed in the game progress information.

Recruiting her costs a total of 5 fans.
