Friendship & Romancing Characters

Friendship

Friendship is measured between an NPC and the player by the amount of filled red hearts they have. Each NPC’s heart meter can be viewed in the relationships tab in the inventory. Friendship can be increased by choosing certain answers while chatting, completing quests associated with the character, or by giving the character daily gifts.

Romance

Romance is enabled within the game among the 15 currently available Romance Candidates. Players may give gifts to these NPCs in order to increase friendship levels and eventually go on “dates” (cutscenes/events). There are eligible characters for marriage in Sun haven, Nel’Vari, and in Withergate. To reach a marriageable stage, players must earn fifteen hearts.

Homes can be entered at two (2) hearts for romanceable characters. Inside each home is an item that lists the character’s loves and likes- I’ll list them for you in this guide. You can also access this list from the relationships tab in the inventory.

After the second date, the NPC will ask the player if they would like to become a couple. If the player answers yes (note that the question is not asked directly), the maximum heart level will be increased from ten to fifteen, and the Player will begin officially dating the NPC.

Gifts

The gifting system is outlined by response and amount of heart progress gained when gifting or speaking with a NPC. “Love” gives one heart, “like” 0.75, and “good” gives 0.5 hearts. I have found that these are actually overestimates! Please be aware that these numbers are used in the guide.

Dating

When a NPC reaches seven friendship hearts, a date will be generated in the form of a new quest (some will have exclamation points on the map). By speaking with the NPC, the player can choose to accept the quest or put it off until a later time. Once accepted, the date will be added to the quest list as normal.

The NPC will give a time and location to meet the next day, such as “10am in front of the library.” If the player is more than one hour late, the NPC will wander off and the unfulfilled quest will disappear from the log at the end of the date. Standing up an NPC does not appear to have in-game consequences. The player will miss the date cutscene, which cannot be revisited. The NPC will behave as though the date occurred.

After a date, dialogue cycles will change to notate the new relationship between the Player and NPC. The player may continue to give gifts to the NPC in order to increase friendship levels. Once the player reaches fifteen hearts with the NPC, the option of Marriage opens up.

Once fifteen hearts have been achieved, gifts will no longer increase friendship levels until the cap is once again expanded after Marriage. This includes preventing any levels from being added retroactively once the cap has been expanded.

Proposal and Engagement

In order for the Player to propose to an NPC, the following conditions must be met:

  • Player has reached fifteen hearts with the selected NPC.
  • Player has proposed using the Engagement ring sold by Bernard.
  • Player is not currently married to any other NPC.
  • Certain number of dialogue cycles have been completed after reaching 15 hearts that indicates the NPC is interested in marriage.
  • These may be subtle hints and differ between NPCs, so it is recommended that the player attempt to propose after possibly receiving one of these dialogues.
  • It may take a number of days before the proposal is accepted.
  • In order to propose, the Player must give the engagement ring to the NPC similar to any other type of gift.

The Engagement Ring does not disappear if the proposal is denied and will be auto-sorted into the Player’s inventory.

The Wedding

If the Player is successful in proposing to the NPC, the wedding will be set for the following day at 4 PM in the area to the north east of Town (to the Left of where the Dragon Train and Sophie are located). Everything will be set up by the townsfolk, and once the Player enters the area, the Wedding scene will commence.

In this scene, Bernard will conduct the Ceremony as the Town’s Administrator. The player is given the option to back out of the wedding at the last moment by selecting “I do not” during the vows. After the Wedding is finished, the Player may walk around and interact with the townsfolk who are in attendance.

Dialogue options revolve around congratulating the Player on their new marriage.

Some of the attendees include certain Withergate and Nel’Vari residents.

Once the Wedding is completed, the Player may exit the area by leaving on the path they came in, at which point the event will end and the area will return to normal. The Player will also receive the Enchanted Wedding Ring, which provides +20 Health, +20 Mana, and +10% experience gain, currently making it one of the best equippable rings in the game.

Married Life

Married NPCs do not move into any of the player’s homes. Characters cannot have children. Players are able to access the NPC’s house at any point during the day, including before 8am and after 8pm. The Player is also able to sleep in the NPC’s bed similar to sleeping at home. They will awaken in the NPC’s house in the morning. When married, there is an increase in heart level cap to twenty, and a new dialogue cycle is in place.

Players who wish to end their marriage to an NPC can visit the Sun Haven town hall to file for divorce by talking to Bernard.
