When on campaign map try to think a few turns ahead. Who are your neighbours? Who among them are you at war with or likely to declare war and attack you and what are their strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly.

Its wise to recruit a second lord to use as bait while your main army stands right next to them in ambush stance. Make sure to check where on the map your ambush success chance is highest, its noted by a number followed by a % symbol. Like 50% for example.

Enemy heroes can detect you even if in ambush stance so make sure none are next to you when you are going to set up an ambush.

Dont overextend by that I mean make sure to only expand your empire when you can keep it safe and have the resources to build it up otherwise you risk of being spread too thin and it will cost you in the end.

Use hero units as advance scouts going ahead of your main army when entering hostile territory. That way you wont stumble into enemy armies with no way to retreat. They will also have a chance to detect hidden/ambush stanced enemies.

Also once you start understanding the game and races/subfactions more deeply it is very easy to get frustrated at how uneven the design and power level can be between them. Try to not compare factions and instead just judge them by themselves for their own merit and enjoyment. The game will be more enjoyable if you do that.
