You can sometimes build a sanctuary to rest and that will allow you a manual save in the field.

I thought at first we only had auto-save at certain points until I realize you could force a save to be created by fully welding a room shut.

Now I realize why there are so many of those little house icons on the map. It is a very interesting save mechanic. It is also useful for lowering your fear and stabilizing injured characters. I kind of like this mechanic even though less convenient than the save anywhere you want. I started to look at how I can carry enough tools for saving.

UPD:

Besides welding doors shut to create a safe room and funneling enemies, do we have other uses for the tools?

• You can sacrifice one tool for two command points.
• You can repair damaged Sentry Guns and recover them with tools.

How to save while at base?

• Advancing to the next day will create a save.
