Fishing Tips
What Does the Feed Button Do?
The Feed button lets you eat a fish to gain that fish’s bonus effect.
- Regular fish buffs last until they are replaced.
- Shiny fish buffs last for 24 or 36 hours before becoming the normal version.
- You start with one buff slot.
- The second and third buff slots are unlocked through the perk tree and Aquarium progression.
How Do You Unlock Fishing Rods?
Each locked rod requires specific fish to unlock. These required fish are referred to as rod fish.
What Do Lures Do?
Rod fish are the fish required to purchase the next locked fishing rod. This only applies to the lowest currently locked rod, so you cannot skip any rods.
Once all fishing rods have been unlocked, there are no more rod fish, and lures no longer have a purpose.
What Is Moneta Used For?
Moneta can be used to:
- Purchase certain perks in the upgrade tree.
- Buy new bait from the Fish Market.
Early in the game, it is worth selling unnecessary non-shiny fish to obtain Moneta and unlock these perks.
What Is the Best Gull Doctrine?
The best doctrine depends on what you are trying to accomplish:
| Goal | Recommended Doctrine |
|---|---|
| Leveling gulls or sparrows | Training, on the Bridge |
| Filling out the Fishdex for mastery | Balanced |
| Catching the most Shiny fish | Balanced |
| Getting the most high-rarity fish | Hunter |
| Getting the most low-rarity fish | Balanced, with a lower-level rod |
| Catching the heaviest fish | Hunter |
Balanced is also good if you are rushing to unlock the Fish Market.
If you are on the Bridge, you can also experiment with the Cursed Hook.
The Aquarium’s Shiny Chance bonus scales with the record catch weight of each species that has a donated Shiny fish.
Shiny Fish
How Do You Get More Shiny Fish?
Before unlocking the Fish Market, the primary way to obtain more Shiny fish is simply to catch more fish.
For better results:
- Level your gulls to 100.
- This unlocks two additional birds, Moonlight, and their fastest fishing speed.
- Send them to the Bridge.
- Deposit any Shiny fish you find into the Aquarium.
Expedition floors are slower, but they come with more useful fish.
Fishing manually is not much of a boost, so you may have something better to do, such as farming GP or running expeditions.
After unlocking the Fish Market, check the penguins for new bait and occasional Shiny contracts.
Aquarium and Fish Market
What Does the Aquarium Do?
The Aquarium is a progression system connected to fishing. It improves your chances of catching Shiny fish, provides passive buffs, and eventually unlocks the Fish Market.
You progress through the Aquarium by catching and donating fish.
The study mechanics changed significantly in version 1.0, but the basic idea remains the same.
Each Aquarium biome has a specific associated buff. For example, creature provides +Radius. Depositing fish of those types increases the corresponding bonus.
Each fish also has a species point value. Earning species points advances the Aquarium Resonance milestones, which unlock various buffs, including the Fish Market.
Depositing Shiny fish has additional benefits:
- It doubles the species point bonus.
- It allows you to view the Shiny fish swimming in the Aquarium.
- It gives you a bonus to your Shiny catch chance.
The Shiny catch bonus scales with that species’ record catch weight.
When Should You Study or Deposit a Fish?
Always deposit Shiny fish.
If you still have perks that require Moneta, prioritize selling fish over studying them.
Where Is the Fish Market and Where Are the Fishing Contracts?
You need 700 points of fish stored.
Once you reach 700 points, go to the Aquarium and click the large swirling purple portal to access the Fish Market.
