What is an Expedition Game Mode?

An Expedition is a limited-time game mode that usually but not always base on the normal game mode setting of No Man’s Sky. The theme of the Expedition is usually but not always based on the recent updated and feature that being added to the game.

Unlike the other game mode where you explore or do whatever you chose on your own time; the Expedition game mode is a objective game mode where you have a series of tasks/objectives to do within the time when the Expedition is available.

When is an Expedition Available?

Usually but not always an Expedition is available not long after when a major update and/or new feature being added to No Man’s Sky.

Why Play Expedition?

Note: This is all based my own opinion on why most people play the Expedition (at least for the veteran player or any player). This may or may not apply to you but disregard what I stated and go play the Expedition or try it out when it available.

  • Easy Answer: For the reward.
  • Another Answer: For the challenge or change of pace.
  • Explanation: Further detail will be given on the “How” part (below).

How to Go About on an Expedition

To start the Expedition you need to start a “New Game” file and then select the “Expedition

The first thing most experiences Expedition player (player who played Expedition before) when it safe to do so after starting the Expedition at the beginning is look up their task/objective.

For Player who never done an Expedition before, there are 5 Phase with 8 task/objective each on the Expedition.

You as a player can do any of the task/objective in any order as long as it available and/or visible. The reward for each task/objective may or may not help you on other task/objective on the Expedition, so read carefully on what objective you need do or what reward that can help you on other objective. If the task/objective is hard to understand, then sometime the game will give you a hint on how to do it by clicking on the objective and look at the mission log. But sometime they don’t give you a hint.

When you finish all 8 objective in one phase, you will be rewarded. As I mentioned before why some if not most people play the Expedition is for the reward. The reward you gain from finishing a phase on an Expedition can be share and gain on all your save file. Let say you have 3 different save file on different game mode, you can still have access to those reward on all of them. You have go to the space anomaly and talk to the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion NPC.

When you finish all the phase in the Expedition, meaning you finish the Expedition. The game automatically convert the save file to Normal game mode.

It is like an unspoken rule among players that if they build something, other players can use it. This is true as the Expedition will bring player on the same travel route.

When I play a Expedition and a build something, I usually don’t deleted the save file until the Expedition is over in case my object or base are helpful to someone.

  1. Found a system that gives Unwelcome only 53 LY from R5’s system. Yellow star, right next to it. Gek faction. Ideraec.

I jumped in, got attacked by a pirate capital ship, and after defeating it immediately got Unwelcome.

  2. Excellent guide, really helped with the challenges that rely on chance encounters. Saved me hours upon hours of time. Should consider doing this for future expeditions!

  3. Hey! Thanks for putting this together. I just wanted to chime in and state that the “Eternal Garden” can be found simply in the same system as Rendezvous 3 – it popped as soon as I warped in.
