Sword of Convallaria – Understanding Scorch & Ever Burning Blade Mechanics

Scorch & Ever Burning Blade Mechanics Explained

By Houseplant.

I am a little confused about Scorch / Ever burning blade mechanics so I decided to use Col to test.

Using:

  • 2 Star Col’s Flurry of Blades (45% damage 3 times).
  • 1 Star Ever Burning Blade (50% chance to apply Scorch, once per Round) (If target has Scorch debuff, deal 20% more DMG).

Scorch effect: (pictured) Lose 10% HP at end of turn and cannot stack but if applied again will immediately take damage 1 time.

No backtracking was used for any test. Test was done on a variety of enemy types, at least 5 different types of enemies.

Test 1: Control Group – Col with no weapon equipped.

Col uses Flurry of Blades

  • Hit 1: 55 damage
  • Hit 2: 55 damage
  • Hit 3: 55 damage

As expected. Nothing to see here.

Test 2: Col with Ever Burning Blade (1 star) equipped

Col uses Flurry of Blades

  • Hit 1: 70 damage
  • Hit 2: 157 damage + 157 damage
  • Hit 3: 157 damage

Note that the above numbers do NOT include any critical hits

I ran Test 2 vs about 10 enemies (so 10 tests), and without fail the below happens:

  • Hit 1: is always normal damage with 1x instance
  • Hit 2: is boosted damage more than double of the normal damage with 2x instances
  • Hit 3: is boosted damage more than double of the normal damage with 1x instances

So injured status will increase damage taken by 20%, or Dying status will increase damage taken by 30%. However even with the Scorch 20% boost and injured/dying status, the Hit 2 and Hit 3 numbers seem exaggerated.

Any time the attack has a critical hit, I disregard this sample. So critical hits are not included.

Despite my Ever Burning Blade being 1 star and therefore a 50% chance of Scorch, it seems like it without fail, will always apply on first hit. And the second hit, it will apply again, causing the doubled instance of boosted damage. Then finally the 3rd hit is boosted as expected.

What also confuses me that Ever Burning Blade is only supposed to give a 20% boost to targets with Scorch, and even if we include dying/injured status, but it seems like the damage bonus is over 100%
