How to Do Things The Game Doesn’t Make Clear
There are some basic mechanics in the game that are NOT made clear how to make work. Help from in-game chat is the only reason many of us know how to do a few seemingly basic (but unexplained) tasks.
Here are a few hard-to-figure-out game mechanic tips.
How to install a door/window:
First install a wall BUT when placing it, hold down right-mouse button. This will bring up a radial menu that allows you to change the shape of the wall to fit doors or windows.
How to add item mods (such as to your shoes):
Left-click the item you want to add a mod to. This will bring the item up in a new window to the mid-upper left for that item that has slots that you may install mods into.
The items I’ve clicked on so far in my limited game-play have all had two slots. Example mods include durability for tools, damage for melee weapons, and stamina usage decrease for shoes.
How to use the Manual Drill:
Hold the ‘F’ key while looking at the drill. This will bring up a radial menu in which you can select to drill for ore, oil, or destroy the device.
Your character then stands on the drill with an animation of using the controls, but you don’t need to press anything after that. Pretty slow and boring to use–I tried drilling for oil for a couple of minutes and just got some clay and sand.
How to smelt ore:
Place wood in the smelter’s ‘consumables’ section, and place your ore in the inventory section. Crafting choices appear to the mid-upper left.
You need first click ‘activate’ to get the fire going, then to click on upper-left menu to select the type of ingots you wish to craft. The options for which type of ingots you are able to smelt are highlighted depending on the type of ore you placed in the smelter.
How to cook meat:
Same basic process as above, except you are cooking in the bonfire.
To split a stack of resources:
Move items with the RIGHT mouse button. When you drop the stack into the other inventory space, you will get an option for how many you wish to move.
Thank you ever so much for these tips. I was going nuts trying to build a home and just could not make a flippin door. I figured it was something simple but unobvious and looks like was right. Again, thanks for this.
