The first battle in the campaign is probably the hardest one.
Guide to Beat First Campaign Battle
Foreword
The reason is the enemy have a lot of cheap APC’s with long range AT missiles. And a lot of artillery.
The best unit you have is your tanks and you have a lot of them BUT try not to loose them since they are key to defending the next battlesin the campaign as well.
My Strategy
First of all have 1 recon unit in left and right side of the map so you can see what the enemy is doing (set them to return fire so they dont shoot at everything).
Now you can see the enemy and your art can hit better.
Avoid long range shooting with your tanks against the enemys APC that have missiles.
Instead position your tanks behind forest and hills and let the enemy come closer before you fight them, maybe even have 2 different tank platoons that attack from two sides at the same time.. Example to 1500m. Your tanks can shoot faster than the apc’s missiles.
Tip
Remember your mortars can shoot smoke, maybe use smoke to blind the enemy so you can get close to them, when the smoke clear the enemy will have lost their range advantage. Its good when you want to advance so the enemy cannot see what you do that will be a big help.
A good tactic is to hide behind a little forest with example 4 tanks, and then drive a little bit forward and shoot 1 or 2 shots and then press G and reverse back into cover behind the forest. Then many of the apc missiles will not hit you. Then repeat this again and again.
AVOID infantry with your tanks at all cost, they are very good at killing tanks (and so are your infantry).
And keep an eye on your tanks health.. Its best to pullback badly injured tanks vs loosing them.. they can be repaired.
Regarding the artillery. You cannot park your vehicles for so long before you get artillery in your head. So when you can get as many 155mm artillery as you can and put them into artillery counter snipe mode.
Pro tip
Only shoot example 2-3 shots and then move your artillery 100m in any directly since the enemy are about to counter snipe you. So the trick is to counter snipe, move and then counter snipe and move ect repeat again and again.
Also you really want to kill the TOS artillery that the enemy have… its VERY deadly.
A little trick can be to send 2 bradlies to the right of the map and kind of drive on the edge of the battle field and then back behind enemy lines and find and kill the art that way.
You dont have to worry that much about planes in the first battle, but maybe setup 1 AA gun somewhere where its safe just to “scare” the enemy a little bit.
ALSO you need to get the two zones as fast as possible that are near your start position.
You probably will loose them again, but you have to take one of them back before the enemies win time run out and it can be a little hard. BUT i recommend to use your command vehicle that have 1 infantry soldier in it, and put him in a house in one of the zones then he is pretty safe and can be there for a long time. And the zone to the left, consider to just take it and then pull your command vehicle back to safety.
Again avoid long range shooting with your tanks vs the vehicles with missiles, get close and fight instead.
Use your artillery if the enemy is parked in large groups now and then to damage and make them panic and then attack with your tanks afterwards.
Note: Remember to move your artillery after 2-3 shots.
At some point if you can you can make a push with your tanks, but in general maybe be a bit defensive and avoid losing your tanks, you just need two zones and then you can win a point victory and concentrate on not loosing to many units and using your artillery to crush their artillery.
Once you have won you will get attacked by another units on the campaign map but they dont have so many tanks as the first one… you can win this battle again the same way.
And once its your turn to move i recommend to retreat to a city (black shield icon). So you avoid getting encircled.
It have a lot of buildings and a Pro tip this is more of an infantry defense kind of thing since there are so many buildings its difficult for tanks.. so use your infantry they can kill a lot of enemy tanks.
But you can position tanks near the highway on the side you are defending and shoot the enemy once they try to cross it.. that is a really good strategy.
Maybe try to send 2-3 bradlies along the edge of the map to get deep behind enemy lines to find the artillery (and maybe bring a truck with fuel).
In general the start of the campaign is unfair since enemy have so many units, BUT after a few battles and retreating then you unlock more reinforcements ect, and that will change the war after a few world map turns.
Tips to NATO Campaign
In this campaign you start out defending and your best army is your tanks as you already know. The idea is you have to delay the enemy as long as possible until other units on the map get unlocked and can come help you.
So your strategy is to defend 1-2 turns and then after that you want to pullback your tanks so they do not get asurrounded on the campaign map.
You need to pay special attention to a little number in the top right on your tanks icon on the campaign map.. If you have 4 points or more then you can attack/defend and ask other units for help that also need to have 4 or more movement points left.
If a unit have less than 4 movement points then its either on its own when being attacked OR the unit next to example your tanks cannot get help if the unit nearby have less than 4 movement points.
So everytime you move your unit on the campaign you need to pay special attention to the movement points that you have since it can effect what you can do.
If there is not enemy you can move as long as you want on the map, but if there are enemys you have to think about how many movements point you have left.
Also some units example the SAM unit on the campaign map, if you have 4 movement points left you can click a button in the lower left that say deploy sam.. When this is activated then no enemy planes can help in a battle fought in the SAM’s area.
The planes are a little bit different… when your tank attack or defend then you can select your planes to come help you (if the enemies SAM is not active) but they can only do this one time pr turn.
All in all i think you need to do the tutorials and learn more about the above.
PS. After a few turns on the nato campaign you will unlock more units.. you just have to delay the enemy..
Tip: Maybe let the enemy advance after turn 3-4 and then send one army unit on the map around the enemy and behind them. If you can cut off the enemys supply so the battle front changes so they dont get any more supply, then they will retreat, this can buy you time and make it more easy.
Super tip regarding the battles… as NATO tanks are the best you have, DO NOT fight the enemies long range APC’s that have missiles.. hide behind a forest and go fight them when they come closer and fire 1-2 shots… then retreat/reverse the tanks back behind the forest and repeat..
Also you can drop smoke so the enemy cannot see when you advance, that is also a good tactic to get closer.
