Guide to Wings Progression

Intro

This i what I found to be the most eficient way to progress with the wings (a must have in almost every scenario in my opinion) but as you may know there is allways other options and opinions! This is just the progression that works best for me.

Pre Hard Mode

  • The only pre hard mode wings that you can get are the Fledgling Wings.
  • They have a 33.33% chance to be found inside the Skyware Chests in the Floating Islands.
  • To find this Islands is recommended to find some Gravitation Potion and scout the sky while you control the gravity.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 0.42 sec
  • Height: 18 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 15 mph

Early Hard Mode

Tier 1

  • The first Wings you should get when you enter Hard Mode are the Leaf Wings.
  • This wings are a huge upgrade and they are super easy to get. You just need to have the Witch Doctor NPC living in the Jungle Biome. Give him a visit during the night and he will sell you the wings for 75 gold coins.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 1.61 sec
  • Height: 53 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 32 mph

Tier 2

Before taking down the Mech Bosses you should get a little upgrade on your wings and you have 3 options (they have the same stats but some may require more farming, the choice is up to you).

First you need 20 Souls of Flight (you will need this for any crafteable wings) dropped from the Wyverns in the Sky.

  • The Fairy Wings require you to farm 100 Pixie Dust , dropped from Pixies in the Hallow.
  • The Frozen Wings are in my opinion the easiest to farm, cause you just need 1 Ice Feather , droped from the Ice Golems with a 33,33% chance of getting it (1 out of 3). This Golems spawn in the snow biome during storms.
  • Finally, the Harpy Wings need a Giant Harpy Feather droped from the Harpies in the sky. I don’t recommend farming this, cause the drop rate is 0.5%. But if you find one go for them!

Stats

  • Fly duration: 2.17 sec
  • Height: 67 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 34 mph

Pre Plantera

After dddefeating 1 of the Mech bosses, you can find Moths in the Underground Jungle, wich have a 50% chance of dropping Butterfly Dust . Combine the dust with 20 Souls of Flight to craft the Butterfly Wings

Stats

  • Fly duration: 2.67 sec
  • Height: 81 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 38 mph

Post Plantera

Tier 1

  • After taking down plantera you can upgrade to the Spectre Wings. This wings are not hard to get and they perform extremely well!
  • As always, get 20 Souls of Flight , and then you need 10 Spectre Bars . To get the Bars, farm 20 Chlorophyte Bars in the Jungle and 10 Ectoplasm from the enemies at the Dungeon.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 2.83 sec
  • Height: 94 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 38 mph

This wings will also grant you a better Vertical speed multiplier of 166% (previous wings have 150%)

Tier 2

  • If you want, you can try you luck in the Pumpkin Moon event and try to get a Spooky Twig , dropped by Mourning Wood to combine it with 20 Souls of Flight to get the Spooky Wings. This wings are a really nice upgrade since all the stats are a little bit superior to the Spectre Wings, but I wouldnt recommend spend too much time farming them, cause if you defeat Golem (easy duh..) you can get the next wings super easily.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 107 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 38 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier: 180%

Post Golem / Pre Moon Lord

Tier 1

If you decided to skip the Spooky Wings now you can buy the Steampunk Wings from the Steampunker NPC for 3 Platinum coins. Note that this wings have the same stats, so if you got the Spooky Wings, skip this wings!

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 107 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 38 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier: 180%

Tier “GG”

  • And finally the best wings you should get before the end game wings (wich you will get after the Moon Lord) are the Fishron Wings. This wings are dropped by Duke Fishron (6,67% in classic difficulty and 10% in Expert and Master difficulty).
  • Note that this wings can be obtained as soon as you enter Hard Mode, so if you are good enough to defeat Duke Fishron and get the wings, you can skip the whole wing progression!

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 143 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 41 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier: 250%

End Game (Post Moon Lord)

After defeating the Moon Lord you can get some End Game wings. Theres no “best option” here… so craft the wings that better suits your needs!

Hover Based Wings

  • The Nebula Mantle and the Vortex Booster can be crafted from the different Pilar Fragments  and the Luminite Bars from the Moon Lord.
  • This “wings” let you hover (x2 time duration while hovering) and give you a 300% acceleration boost while hovering.
  • They have the same stats.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 107 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 33 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier: 245%

Fast Ascending Speed Wings

  • The solar Wings and the Stardust Wings can be crafted from the different Pilar Fragments  and the Luminite Bars from the Moon Lord.
  • This wings give you 50% extra max ascent speed, faster acceleration.
  • They have the same stats.

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 167 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 46 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier: 300%

Expert/Master Exclusive

If you are playing on Expert or Veteran difficulty, you can try getting the Celestial Starboard wich is by far, the best “wings”in the game. The starboard is dropped by the Moon Lord.

This item will let you hover and also gives you speed bonus for hovering + full control of your vertical ascending speed!

Check this insane stats:

Stats

  • Fly duration: 3 sec
  • Height: 201 tiles
  • Horizontal Speed: 41 mph
  • Vertical Speed Multiplier:450%

  1. About the Queen Slime mount if you wait till its done flying then as it starts descending unmount, you are able to fly fully with your wings as well.

  2. thanks now i learned that i should have steampunk wings instead of still having butterfly wings

  3. soaring insignia probable didnt add the soaring insignia because they are not actually wings and you still need an item that allows flight in your accesories for the insignia to be useful, for people who use wings as only partial mobility and rely on other things as well its probably better to have that free spot
