System Shock – How to Tame Loot Goblin: Vending Machine Price List

A handy, itemized price list of Citadel’s vending machine inventory, for the discerning Hacker who ain’t got time to scrap everything that isn’t nailed down.

Power at a Price

In the process of remaking the venerable System Shock, Nightdive has introduced a novel and terrifying system into Citadel Station:

Commerce.

With the advent of convenient vending machines and readily-obtained company scrip comes that needling voice in every adventurous mind, an incessant demand to snatch up all the money and buy all the things – a gluttonous, greedy urge that comes ever-so-easily to the desperate, the lonesome, and the Skyrim-obsessed.

The voice of the Loot Goblin.

Fig. 1: The Common Loot Goblin (Auriphage Verdigrift) seeking its next meal.

An insidious creature that demands you gather every possible scrap of, well, scrap, no matter how far out of your way that instinct takes you. That eleventy-fifth trip to the recycler to squeeze the TriOptimal amount of cash from those bits and bobs you found all over the place is absolutely worth it, or so you’re told. Nevermind that you’ve already got five hundred credits rattling around in your pocketses – there’s more to be had, ripe for the taking!

Though single-minded and insatiable, the Loot Goblin’s presence is not entirely without benefit. With the proper information and planning, you can harness and direct its bottomless greed, resulting in just enough lucre to afford all that Citadel can offer long before your time within its halls has come to a close. Never again will you need to spend hours shuffling back and forth in dangerous hallways like a disgruntled janitor!

To that end, I have compiled a list of all the vending machines’ inventories and the cost of their goods, so that an enterprising Hacker may quickly form a working supply budget and minimize wasted time spent wondering just how many more credits need to be farmed.

Floor 0 – Reactor

More fun than you can shake a Geiger counter at!

No, really, why is it shaking? That’s… that’s not normal at all.

Though their nests are often cluttered with ill-gotten gains, most Loot Goblins have meticulous hygiene and are particular about keeping their homes clean, if not rigidly organized. Laundering money (in the literal sense) is a common leisure activity.

With the advent of vending machines rendering traditional haggling techniques impractical, many Auriphage subspecies were forced to adapt by environmental pressure. The Auriphage Verdigrift has evolved to survive in areas of elevated urban activity by developing a keen sense of value for recyclable materials and unattended coinage; a Common Loot Goblin can identify the rough amount of loose change lost in a couch or laundromat, or the recycle credit of a full-sized dumpster’s contents in seconds, often within a five percent margin of error.

Use caution when ordering from the lounge Snacktron – SHODAN’s Sriracha Pimento Prolapse Spicy Meatballs should be enjoyed responsibly.

Should you choose to travel with a Loot Goblin, common safety practices encourage it be kept within arm’s reach whenever not in active use. Not only to prevent it from wandering off and thus endangering both parties, but also to provide it necessary elevation to retrieve any hard-to-reach valuables.

Floor 6.1 – Alpha Grove

So quiet, you can hear a penny drop in the distance.

No vending machines on this floor

Owing to its diminutive size, the Common Loot Goblin is not often aggressive, preferring to satisfy its kleptomaniac instincts without open confrontation. However, it is known to lash out when under environmental stress, in extreme danger, or when it has been unable to find a source of new income to return to its nest for longer than two weeks (on average).

Though often observed to take great risks in the pursuit of riches, the Common Loot Goblin is a quick-thinking specimen under duress. When faced with overwhelming danger, cunning members of the species are quick to employ “Gozag’s Handshake” – using large sums of their pilfered goods (among other techniques) to distract their pursuers, often referred to by their exasperated handlers as “The Great Green Cut ‘n Run”.

Floor 8 – Security

“Whaddaya mean, that’s not the point of a lost-and-found?! Someone else lost it, and I found it!”

As a Point of No Return, you’re best served by ensuring you have enough credits for the remaining vendors before you enter the main room of the floor. There is a recycler and cargo lift if you’ve forgotten anything or need to cash in some last-minute scrap – there are several high-value items in the upper floors, as well as weapons dropped by the cyborgs scattered around, in case you need one last burst of capital.

Of course, if you’ve been able to control your Loot Goblin’s energies up to this point, you should have no trouble cleaning out the last few vending machines if you so desire.

Floor 9 – Bridge

Guns? Explosives? Fancy tech and chrome? Nah, chummer, I’m just going to run up there and slap that cyber-slattern with the biggest electromagnet you’ve ever seen. Sit back and watch, it’s gonna be fun.

Many Auriphage species are highly social creatures, and the Common Loot Goblin is no exception. Though they often prefer to remain “under the radar”, it is possible for a human to convince one to cohabitate, offering protection, companionship, and a secure nesting ground in exchange for the Loot Goblin’s services. Such domestication should not be considered lightly, however, as an unruly Auriphage can cause serious problems; conversely, building a strong rapport can bring many unexpected windfalls and an emotional bond of surprising longevity.

While trying to amass nearly 1000 credits over the course of the game might be daunting, keep in mind that it’s unlikely you’ll need to empty out every single vending machine – mods and ammo for weapons you won’t use can be comfortably skipped, as well as all of the food items outside of dire circumstances. Even patches are unlikely to be cleaned out wholesale, as Stamina and Vision lose usefulness by about the midgame, and Detox can be ignored after setting off the Reactor if you don’t mind waiting out the withdrawal effects of Reflex and/or Berserk. Ultimately, anything beyond 947 is merely to reward your Loot Goblin for its hard work.

Good luck and good hunting, Hacker!

Given proper training and encouragement, a domesticated Loot Goblin can provide its partner companionship and steady supplemental income, while only requiring modest oversight to prevent legal repercussions.
