Tips for Chicken Farms

Chickens eat 1 food item at a time from a stack (Dandelions are best IMO, save your seeds for farming/tree replacement).

Chickens will eat a seed every set time period if they can reach it.

If you are near them and they eat they will begin the breed state. You’ll see hearts.

When breeding every three rooster crows (I think that’s the value) they will lay an egg.

If you have a fire near the eggs, they will hatch into chicks in 2-3 days. If no fire, they will remain as eggs.

Chicks will eat the food, but do not lay eggs.

If there are too many mobs in the area near the chickens, they will stop breeding but continue to eat food.

I have found great success building an elevated egg farm. If you want chicken meat, warm some eggs and then butcher them.
