Valheim – Tips to Sail Without Map Navigation

Here you can find few useful tips that might help you to travel with no map navigation. It’s really fun!

How to Sail with No Map Navigation

Basics

Following coastlines is an inefficient but reliable way of not getitng lost. If you do need to go out into the open ocean, landmarks and remembering what the landmass you came from and are going to looks like is super important.

Beacons, weather and islands

Build beacons along shoreline. Max height raised stone pillar topped by protected campfire and 2x2m build pieces so they are high in the render order. I’d build at least three, one at point of departure and one along shore to either side just beyond max render distance.

If you get far enough from shore that the beacons begin to disappear and you do not see any land, turn back.

If you find that the little island you spotted is a leviathan, do not mine it if you intend to use it as a navigational stepping stone.

Do not sail in bad weather or any kind of limited visibility including night. To avoid drift, jump off ship on the ladder side and just float until visibility gets better.

Do not try sailing far from shore until you have exhausted the four major and four minor cardinal directions from your origin island. Better to go the long way around than to get lost going in circles somewhere in the middle.

The marks

Make marks that you was there. Fire, cut a tree, plant a tree from other biome, make signs, build something… When you come back you now you are in the right place. Use the sun and the big tree in the sky to guide you. Use your hammer as a compass.

In land I ike to point the ward north. By sea you can use a boat to show you the north. As you are playing in a group, one should be the navegator, he knows the north and where you are heading, and the guides the captain. When you reach land, build something pointing to the direction you came. While you travel, be aware of your surroundings, you can see mountains from a great distance, you can also use it as a reference.

The branch in the sky is asymmetrical and can be used for nav, also the sun and moon, like minecraft.
