War Thunder – How to Play the T-72AV

This is a guide for but not limited to wallet warriors just got the T-72AV and need general info of the vehicle.

Positioning and Armor

Сrеdit gоеs to N0XZ !

The T-72AV features composite armor, which offers good protection against enemy shells. Position your tank to use the armor effectively.

Slightly angle your tank to maximize the effective thickness of your armor however, do not angle the tank too much in an open environment. It would cause your auto-loader/ammo rack exposed leading to the death of your fellow crew by explosive blast.

S: Angling the T-72 in an open environment is impractical for its need for a precise angle however if your bottom half of your tank is behind cover, you can angle your tank much more and be more secure. Take advantage of your armor to the best of your ability

(All tests were done with the M735 Round from the M1 Abrams as a benchmark)

Hull-Down Positioning

Utilize hull-down positioning whenever possible. This tactic involves using terrain or obstacles to hide your tank’s lower hull, exposing only your well-armored turret. It makes it challenging for enemies to penetrate your tank. The T-72AV and all modern Russian MBT’s have very poor negative vertical guidance which means your barrel can’t go very down as good as other MBTs you’d be competing against. The reason is because the Russian Engineers designed the tank behind the primary landscape of the nation which are plains. The solution to this issue is to use the Dozer blade whenever you can. The Dozer blade lets you remove dirt which you can make your own tank trench which is the solution the covering your hull armor.

Take account that it takes 20-100 seconds varying on how experienced you are at doing it due to the 4 KPH speed your tank moves at in reverse.

Use Your Gun

The T-72AV is armed with a powerful 125mm smoothbore gun. This gun is effective against a variety of enemy vehicles.

Aim for weak points on enemy tanks, such as turret rings, gun barrels, and driver’s ports.

Ammo Selection

The T-72AV uses various types of ammunition however, these are the ones you should only care about, so choose your rounds wisely based on the target:

Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS):

Use this for heavily armored targets. It has excellent penetration capabilities.

High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT):

Effective against medium armored vehicles and lightly armored targets. It has good post-penetration damage however, if you know a target has ERA on their tank, refrain from targeting that part of the tank due to the Post penetration damage being lost after the ERA armors effects.

Watch Your Flanks

Be aware of enemy tanks attempting to flank or outmaneuver you. Keep an eye on your surroundings and respond promptly to any threats. The T-72 Tanks are not agile.

Teamwork / Summary

You and your team need to play together to win matches. Most of your teammates will be in the same tank and have only one of it which means once they are killed, they are gone for the game.

All Modern Russian Tanks are 3 crew tanks which means if you lose just 2 of them, you will automatically get killed. Collaborate with your team and share information about enemy positions.

Effective communication can lead to better coordination and a stronger overall performance on the battlefield for your team.
